angry birds birthday party

Well, little Mr. Harley turned 5 last week!

To me this is crazy.  I say it every year my munchkins turn a year older.. but for my baby to be five… *sigh. His ‘friend’ birthday party isn’t until the end of the month.. busy April and procrastination by yours truly… should have booked the venue a little sooner! (ooops!).. anyway, since his actual ‘birthday party’ isn’t for quite a while yet.. I was really feeling the need to make my boy feel special on his big day!

Besides.. every birthday should be made to feel the most special day ever, right?

So the night before, I blew up dozens and dozens of balloons (kind of a tradition since he was just little).. I also knew I wanted to do angry birds balloons.. I had seen them on Pinterest and all over the internet… so, I took a chance and googled ‘angry birds balloons printable‘ ..and woweeee, I couldn’t have been happier and more relieved when I came across exactly what I was after!  ..thank you for saving me hours upon hours.. yes, thank you to whoever created these!

So fun!  I made these while he was sleeping… love seeing the surprised face in the morning!  With the printable these were so easy.. just cut and tape!

So glad I hung onto these blocks from when he was a toddler… they are perfect for creating ‘angry birds levels’ …have I mentioned that Harley is obsessed with angry birds these days?  He build levels.. hides the pigs and then launches the birds… all day long.  Personally, I love it.  So much creativity!

It was angry birds world around here for a few days.. blocks, birds.. pigs… play-doh birds and pigs even!  Why not, right?

His cake.. the beloved green boomerang bird.  His favourite.  I was lucky I got away with just doing a single bird.. my cake designer son had other plans.  I think they watch too much cake boss.

I ended up using a ‘ball’ cake pan, and an extra large muffin tin to make the bird’s beak… just placed it on it’s side and carved it into a point.  Worked surprisingly well!  Of course it isn’t anywhere near the size it should have been… that boomerang bird has a huge beak!

In the end, it was really pretty simple… balloons and a cake.  It was the perfect little family birthday party.. just the four of us, thought it would just be three.. but hubby was able to make it home after all!  ..he had been away at work again.  I must say, the birthday boy was quite pleased that his daddy made it home… pleased is putting it mildly!  Totally made his day.

..still can’t believe my baby boy is five.

our very own chalkboard wall

I have been itching’ to do this at home for awhile now!  Had the spot picked out and everything.. the only thing stopping me was the motivation!  You know how that goes, right?

A few weekends ago, I finally got around to it.  So glad.  It really didn’t take that long, the wall is so very small!  I had chosen this little half wall right in our front entry.. and across the ‘hall’ from my office.

..before…

This spot was ideal for a few reasons!

First off, I wasn’t going to use this wall for anything else.. kind of an awkward height for hanging photos.. no room for a shelf or anything, since the front door is right there.. but yet it was screaming …do something with me!  Also, with my office being right there.. I thought it might be nice having the chalkboard wall there for the kids to play at.. since it is so close, they feel as though they are in the room with me!  Perfect, right!?

…after..

See how much the kids adore it.. Harley has mastered his Angry Birds drawings!

FUN!  I have to admit.. as it got chalkier and more and more ‘messy’… I have grown to love it even more!  Yep, we are all in love!  So so so much fun!  Thinking about a chalkboard wall?  DO IT!!  You won’t regret it!

Even looking at these before and after photos, I am falling in love even more! lol  This little spot needed something… and this was definitely the perfect little something!  ..and I only had a mild panic attack over all of the chalk dust, aren’t you proud of me? hee heee! ;)

yesterday..

Yesterday.

The kids had dentist appointments.  Each kid had two cavities that needed fillings.  But Mr. Harley had a bit more going on.. you see, Harley is a daredevil… and because of this, he had damaged his one front tooth a little too much.  At one point a few years ago, it turned completely grey… he banged it that hard.  That isn’t all.. this summer, he hit it hard again.  Really hard.  When they went in for their cleanings last month.. they were really concerned about this one tooth in particular… so we were warned that they may want to take it out.

Not what this mommy wanted to hear, this isn’t how you are supposed to loose your first tooth!  …and besides… my baby is only four!

So I did what any mom would do.. had a quick little photo shoot on the way out the door!

Had to capture that baby smile one last time, right?  Oh gosh… yesterday was so hard.  I was a sentimental fool! I knew I should have followed Harley’s lead on this.. he was thinking it was kind of neat that he would be loosing a tooth like some of his older friends!  In fact, he was so chill that he fell asleep in the dentist’s chair while getting his fillings (seriously… HOW!?) …he kept his cool pretty much the entire time, until he saw me crying like a baby after they pulled it.  Ugh.  Not a proud mommy moment, but I just couldn’t hold it together any longer.  I was so immensely proud of him for being so brave, but so sad that he lost his first tooth like this… and incredibly sentimental that his smile would be changing so so so soon.  He is just too little.

But you don’t fool around with abscessed teeth.. right?  Right?  Ugh.

Tucking him in last night, while he was putting his tooth under the pillow for the tooth fairy… he rolls over, fist pumps into the air with both arms… “this is SO AWESOME!” he shouts! lol  ”I will have my own money to buy Angry Birds toys!!”  …oh good grief.  Follow his lead… am I right?  Harder than it sounds!

*Sigh.

..aaaand it is open! ..the interior of propeller & co.

What an amazing experience this has been! ..working on a design concept for a retail space.. and creating something real with it!  Propeller & Co. opened their doors last Monday (and I have been on pins and needles ever since!) ..if you are local to Grande Prairie, you should definitely go check it out!  Her collection of products, combined with vintage treasures makes for an amazing shopping experience!

This entire concept was focused around texture… lots and lots of texture, name of the game was to make this once ‘cold’ space nice and cozy ..and inspiring! ..and if her products alone didn’t accomplish that, there is definitely a fair bit of textural elements added throughout the space!  I love love love that Tracy just let me run with all of these ideas.. I think in the end, the space is a total reflection of her and what she wanted her store to be!

I added texture to the walls in the form of hundreds upon hundreds of paper flowers..

Lots and lots of hanging/dangling elements throughout the space.. the ladder time was soooo worth it!

..like pom poms, lanterns, fabric… and I loved rolling along with concepts, like this one below… store owner Tracy brought in these boxes of mini patio light type lanterns, lots of them.. with a simple “can we do anything with these?”  ..after some quick brainstorming, this is what was created!

We ditched the lights, strung them up with twine and added little ties of fabric scraps!!  SO fun!

A peek into the children’s area.. loooove how the chalkboard wall turned out!

You knew that there would have to be paper butterflies in this space, right!? ..but of course!

I loved the creative brainstorming on this project.. like the sunglasses display, something out of the box (ha ha.. no pun intended! lol) was needed… something that matched the feel of the rest of the store… warm, cozy.. and a little bit funky!

Well.. why not boxes stapled to the wall!?  YES yes yes!!  ..and I just happened to have a huge supply of them here from my etsy store (which is still on a permanent vacation it seems.. it will happen, soon I hope!)…

I printed off the reading glasses ‘paper’ here at home… this part of the installation just clicked into place, love that!  ..the glasses are photoshop overlays from Vol. 25!!   Loving how this turned out, so much so that I am thinking of replicating it here at home some how!

The top of the checkout counter was covered in vintage music sheets, old book pages and glitter… lots and lots of glitter!

There is a chalkboard hung by the door.. which she will change out quotes, something fun to greet you!  ..the chalkboard art is inspired by this fabulous fabulous print from Freya Ete.. check it out here!

The logo on the wall!

I also designed the logo/branding/signs for this amazing store (woweee.. knowing that Tracy had the confidence in me to do all of this was frightening at times.. but so very inspiring… *sigh, this whole experience has been so so so amazing!).. I will share more about the branding process in a separate post!

More texture..

During some of the early demo.. we uncovered some nasty glue covered exposed wall studs!  Ick!  One of the biggest challenges the entire time was figuring out how to cover it!  Original plan was to find old barn wood.. salvaged wood of some sort and build it up to look like a big solid wooden beam… add some warmth and character. But, since it is the middle of winter here.. finding wood proved to be harder than we thought.

That is how this installation was born!  I came up with this idea to use canvas.. tear it into strips and tie it up, over and over again.. enough to cover the wood… and honestly, this turned out to be my very most favourite project of the entire process!  Gotta love how things work out! ;)

This is just a glimpse of the final project, if you would like to see more.. I have an album with a bunch of pictures on my Dearest Someday Facebook page… feel free to pop on over if you like!

So thankful I was given the opportunity to work with Tracy on this!  It was so rewarding to crawl inside her head so to speak and work with her to create this.. to watch her make her dreams a reality… so so very inspiring!
